Questions Catholics Often Ask
When They Visit Woodland Church

The following are common questions Catholic friends often ask when they visit Woodland Church.

How is the Protestant church
different from the Catholic Church?
There are two main differences.  They
can be summed up in two phrases:
"Scripture alone," and "faith alone.

Do Baptists believe in Purgatory?
The Bible simply doesn’t mention a place like Purgatory—

What about praying for the dead so they can get out of Purgatory?
Since Jesus paid for all my sins on the Cross, God has no need for a place like Purgatory

I was already baptized as a Catholic, why do I have to be baptized again?
The only baptism the church practiced in the Bible is believer’s baptism.
Why get baptized?
Jesus commanded it. That’s reason enough right there, isn’t it?
Why do I have to be "dunked" when I get baptized?
The word "baptize" means to “dip” or “immerse.”

How do we confess our sins without a confessional or a priest?
What about when a Christian sins?
Why don't I have to talk to a priest? Where does it specifically say in the Bible?
A priest acts as a mediator between God and mankind, a go-between.  But Christ Himself is our one mediator with God.

We use sacraments in the Catholic church to be sure we are going to Heaven.
Our assurance of salvation is based on the promise of God, not on observing certain rituals.

Does the Baptist church have sacraments?  Why or why not?
In the Bible Jesus instituted only two observances for the church to do.
Why don't Baptist churches recognize the Saints with the same authority that Catholics do?
In the New Testament every believer was called a saint.

Do you pray to the Saints?  Why or why not?
We don’t have to pray to saints because of our position as believers.
Explain the relationship between the Catholic Church and Protestants
For the first three hundred years the church was just the church.
Who is in charge of the church, such as finances, staffing?  What is the hierarchy?
Many evangelical churches use a congregational model of church government.

What's most important for your Church?
What's most important to us, for anyone, is that they have put their faith in Christ as their one and only Savior.
